Why would an ordinary guy like me decide to write a book on genetic haemochromatosis? I am not a doctor nor a professional writer - but following a talk I gave in London on my past experiences over almost twenty years, the seed was sown. It does indeed seem to be a bit of an anomaly especially as I tend to be a rather frivolous guy always with a eye on the humorous aspects of life. This begs the question of why does a non serious chap like me want to write on a very serious and little known subject? The reason is my continued determination to spread the word far and wide about this life-threatening illness that is so often overlooked and misunderstood by medical attendants. Having said all this, one might ask what qualifications have I to write this little book. On paper none but I have lived with this illness for a long time and have researched it closely, including visits to two symposiums at Cardiff University Hospital, travelling to a conference of the Iron Disorders Institute at Washington and being chosen to represent haemochromatosis at the Discern Genetic Project team in association with Oxford University. I abm also one of the longest standing members of the British Haemochromatosis Society and have maintained my own personal website for some 15 years, from which I have answered many questions from confused and sometimes distressed correspondents. My little book is not a text book nor a do it yourself medical book, but I have tried to make it a light hearted account of some of my experiences; some of them amusing as in my experiences with Hypogonadism (sexual dysfunction) and more disturbing problems with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and just a hint of an earlier drink problem. The book contains a useful glossary together with details of international help and information organisations. Alan

The Hemochromatosis Cookbook
This book has been my bible and reference book for many years and I have never found another book that is so clearly written and so well structured as it deals with many problems through case studies and has a comprehensive index. This is the only book once offered for sale by the British Society. It is authoritative and well written and I would not be without a copy.
I have always enjoyed cooking but I was a little bit phased when I realized that I would have to cook differently to limit my iron intake. Cheryl Garrison's book, has been a great help to me in keeping me focused on this dietry requirement. Cheryl's husband suffers from our complaint and Cheryl whom I have known for several years, has worked intensely to find tasty and interesting low iron dishes. She is rather an authority on G.H. and ran a lively forum for the Iron Institute of America.
