This website contains facts, information and personal experiences of haemochromatosis

What's a Haemochromatotic?

Haemochromatotic(s) - A person or persons suffering with haemochromatosis.
As I haven't seen nor heard the word used anywhere else, I think it was coined by Dr. James Dooley who is an adviser to our society

John Steinbeck is unquestionably one of America's greatest writers and many of his books have been transcribed for the films including:

The Grapes Of Wrath
East Of Eden
The Red Pony
The Pearl
Of Mice And Men
The Moon Is Down

What is less know and something I discovered a few years ago was that his son also called John Steinbeck suffered from Haemochromatosis and died of this and cirrhosis of the liver at a fairly early age. It is noted that both he and his father were very heavy consumers of alcohol.
John senior died in 1968 from a severe heart attack after a lot of suffering and it would be interesting to know whether he also had haemochromatos but back in 1968 it was not diagnosed so readily.

I treasure this possibility about my favourite all time author.

We're getting some recognition:

On Friday23rd of July I received an e.mail from a cinematographic organisation saying that they had been commissioned by the NHS to make a short film to increase the awareness of haemochromatosis and the format was to get a medical specialist to outline the illness with a complimentary  interview with a sufferer and they said that they had seen my website and invited me to give a live case study. I agreed readily but was surprised at their eagerness, as they wanted to film on on Tuesday of the following week.
Initially there would be an edited version which will then be posted on the NHS videos site and available throughout the world. They sent me a written synopsis of the format and initially I was rather concerned as they wanted me to emphasise how diet had helped me to control the condition and as most of the U.K. medical experts do not give much credence to dietary restrictions, save for the blatant ones of red meat and offal. Being a little apprehensive I decided to do my best.
Today, two young people ( brother & sister)  arrived humping; cameras, tripods and lighting and I showed them to my little flat fully expecting that they would want a bigger room but they were delighted with its small intimacy . Various distractions were removed and all windows closed because of the close proximity of Birmingham Airport. They wanted two things, the first was an interview with me in which I was lead by the young lady leading me with pertinent questions which took about 15 minutes and the second was some footage of me at my website on the computer; which was shot silently, which is always difficult for me.
I tried to cover as much of the haemochromatosis scene as possible , including hypogonadism, hearing loss, arthritis, diabetes and bronze colouration. I strove to cover as much of the field as I could, considering the time allowed and I know that they will edit it down, but to what I do not know. I was just grateful that I did not have a fit of the jitters, but in fact they said that I seemed to be very calm and I did manage to get a scene with my little book on show.
The video is due to come out in about 2 months when I shall give you all a further reminder.

Cheryl Garrison's recipe for Marinated Flank Steak

Marinade:

2 cups hot strong coffee

1/4 cup honey

1 tablespoon ground ginger

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1.1/2 pounds flank steak

What to do:

In a flat glass caserole dish combine the coffee honey ginger and soy sauce. Place the mear in the dish and marinate in the fridge for 24 hours.

Remove the meat from the marinade. Prepare the grill.

Grill the meat on each side for 5 minutes or place under the broiler (George Forman) for 10 minues. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing.

Slice the meat on an angle in thin slices.

Serves 4

*Note: Due to the high heam content of this recipe, drink tea and serve this dish with low-iron vegetables such as 1/2 cup of green beans or 1/2 cup of fried cabbage and onions.

Cheryl's recipies give details of the heme and non-heam iron intake per serving along with other information useful to anyone who is preparing food where iron intake needs to be controlled.

Haemochromatosis book by Alan Mannering

Any Old Iron

The book tells of my personal experience of Haemochromatosis

Please click on the book image for more details about how I came to write it and how you can obtain a copy

The Iron Disorders Institute Guide to Hemochromatosis
This book has been my bible and reference book for many years and I have never found another book that is so clearly written and so well structured as it deals with many problems through case studies and has a comprehensive index. This is the only book once offered for sale by the British Society. It is authoritative and well written and I would not be without a copy.
The Hemochromatosis Cookbook
I have always enjoyed cooking but I was a little bit phased when I realized that I would have to cook differently to limit my iron intake. Cheryl Garrison's book, has been a great help to me in keeping me focused on this dietry requirement. Cheryl's husband suffers from our complaint and Cheryl whom I have known for several years, has worked intensely to find tasty and interesting low iron dishes. She is rather an authority on G.H. and ran a lively forum for the Iron Institute of America.
Kindle in use by Alan Mannering

Have you considered a Kindle?

As far as the Kindle is concerned..... don't be put off because it is a new-fangled piece of technology or because 'it isn't the same as holding a book' ! Of course its new technology and of course it isn't like holding a book, but most people reading this are computer literate and the Kindle is basically a compact computer, so if you can use the machine you're reading this on, then you'll easily cope with a Kindle. The Kindle is smaller and lighter than a book, very neat and portable in fact. Click on the picture on the right and read more about them, I do most thoroughly recommend them especially if your eyes are giving you trouble reading. As you can see from the photo of me on the left, you can use it outside in sunlight. You know how housewives say that their Aga is 'the friend in the kitchen', well, my Kindle is 'my friend in my pocket'.
Best wishes to you all
Alan
